About this work

What do the lecture halls of Salamanca have to do with Philadelphia? Ricardo Rivero Ortega, Professor of Administrative Law and Rector of the University of Salamanca from 2017 to 2024, traces in this short essay the legacy of the School of Salamanca (Francisco de Vitoria, Domingo de Soto, Francisco Suárez) in the Declaration of Independence of 1776 and in the Constitution of the United States.

Ideas on the consent of the governed, natural law and the limits of power, with Castilian precedents such as the Perpetual Law of Ávila of 1520, travelled from the Salamanca classrooms to the founding texts of the first modern republic.

An essay to read in an afternoon, published in the year of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Also available in Spanish: La influencia de la Escuela de Salamanca en la Declaración de Independencia y la Constitución de los Estados Unidos.
